Plans for new £70m leisure extension to Exeter’s Princesshay Shopping Centre to be unveiled

Plans for a £70m leisure extension to Exeter’s Princesshay Shopping Centre, the popular south west retail destination, will be unveiled at a public exhibition later this month by The Crown Estate and TIAA Henderson Real Estate (TH Real Estate).

The scheme, known as Princesshay Leisure, will involve regenerating the existing bus station, between Paris Street and Sidwell Street, to create 180,000 sq ft of new leisure accommodation, incorporating a cinema, restaurants, cafes and shops, as well as a substantial new city centre public square and amphitheatre.

The plans will also include a new, modern bus station for Exeter, which, alongside the new development and improved public spaces, will enhance Princesshay’s position as the main gateway to the city centre and consolidate Exeter as the south west’s premier retail and leisure destination.

The new development would be designed to complement and enhance the wide range of shopping and dining options already available to customers at Princhessay, which include leading brands such as Topshop, Topman, River Island, New Look, Apple, Joules and Fat Face, as well as restaurants including Carluccios, Byron and Jamie’s Italian, which is expected to open in February 2015.

Princesshay Leisure would sit alongside the Council’s proposed leisure centre, which would deliver a new swimming pool and sports facilities.

John Grinnell, Development Manager for the Princesshay Leisure scheme, said: “Our proposals will transform a tired, run-down site, providing a range of entertainment and dining options to complement Princesshay’s already popular retail and leisure offer. These plans will help strengthen Princesshay’s position as the south west’s premier shopping and leisure destination, at the same time as creating hundreds of new jobs and facilitating major improvements to the city’s infrastructure and public spaces. We are looking forward to meeting Exeter’s shoppers, businesses and residents and hearing their views about regenerating this important gateway to city centre.”

The consultation will help The Crown Estate & TH Real Estate prepare an outline planning application, to be submitted to the City Council by the end of the year. The Public Exhibition will take place in the former Blue Wing Gallery unit (next to Coffee 1), Roman Walk, Princesshay, EX1 1QA, on:

  • Thursday 20th November, 12 to 8pm
  • Friday 21 November, 10am to 6pm
  • Saturday 22nd November, 10am to 4pm

Representatives of Princesshay’s owners and their professional team will be on hand at the consultation to answer questions. There will also be information on the proposals available on Princesshay’s website ( and an option to submit feedback electronically.
