TH Real Estate sells the Smithfield Quarter to The City of London Corporation

Smithfield

TH Real Estate has sold the Smithfield Quarter, London to the City of London Corporation.

Smithfield Quarter is made up of the General Market and other disused buildings at the Western end of Smithfield.  The Smithfield Poultry Market and the wholesale Meat Market buildings are not part of the deal and remain in active use.  TH Real Estate retains ownership of the Charterhouse Place development site.

Geoff Harris, Head of Development, TH Real Estate, said:  “During our five year custodianship of the buildings which make up the Smithfield Quarter, the General Market, Old Fish Market and the Red House, we have worked hard to honour and respect its rich and varied history. We have done this through undertaking works to arrest decay and improve rail structures, thereby ensuring the properties long term future.

“We believe in the regeneration of the area and are naturally disappointed to not continue our collaborative work with parties such as Heritage England, the City Corporation and the Meat Traders, to find a commercially viable solution for the reuse of the buildings. However, we think a sale of the assets to the City of London to allow them to pursue alternative uses will contribute to the area in a significant way. We retain other assets in the Smithfield area and look forward to seeing the scheme to be brought forward by the City in due course.”
