L'Aljub Shopping Centre is awarded the BREEAM®ES sustainability certification


Our European Retail Property Fund's L’Aljub Shopping Centre in Elche has reached an important milestone, having been awarded the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Methodology (BREEAM®ES) In-use sustainability rating for both its management and the building itself.

BREEAM®ES is an advanced environmental assessment method and rating system for buildings. It is a worldwide leader with more than 20 years of experience in the market, and over 270,000 certified buildings in 63 countries.

The L’Aljub Shopping Centre boasts 150,000 sq m of space, and offers a retail and leisure mix comprising  a range of leading fashion and dining brands. Having oassed the stringent requirements of BREEAM®ES In-use, the building was recognised as 'Very Good', while the management was recognised as 'Excellent'.

The team at L’Aljub Shopping Centre recognises the value of energy efficiency and the effective use of water. It has concentrated its efforts on improving the centre's facilities and measuring consumption levels, applying a rigorous management system to temperature and lighting control facilities. Together with the onsite team, we have implemented measures to monitor and control environmental parameters, introducing "free cooling" which consists of providing natural ventilation during a significant part of the year, representing a considerable saving. The shopping centre has also implemented other improvement initiatives such as waste management, the emission of contaminants, and the health and wellbeing of employees and visitors.

Since the Energy Savings and Environmental Impact Plan was implemented in 2009, coupled with the measures put into effect over the past year to obtain the BREEAM®ES In-use rating, the centre has achieved energy savings of 30% and a reduction in water consumption of 5%.  

Following numerous environmental initiatives, we are delighted to have been awarded the BREEAM®ES In-use certification. It is crucial that buildings demonstrate their energy saving and sustainable features, not just in terms of providing added value for investors, but also for occupiers who increasingly place importance on the environmental values of any asset.
